The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course requires pre-course knowledge to Day Skipper theory level. Assumed knowledge includes CTS, COG, EPs, knowledge of tidal heights, fall of tide, working out projected depths for anchoring, working out clearances under bridges, some basic weather, basic collision regulations etc.
The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory course takes Day Skipper level students to a completely new level bringing an understanding of secondary, a greater knowledge of tidal streams, heights etc. Safety, weather, position fixing and much more is covered in greater detail.
The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course is the level require for the RYA Coastal Yachtmaster, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical certificates and is a pre-course requirement for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course.
The course takes approximately 40-50 hours with a long assessment of 3 parts (IRPCS 1.5 hours, Chartwork 2 hours and Passage Making 3.5 hours). These can be taken in one sitting or as 3 separate papers.

Theory courses are great at providing the background knowledge to enhance your boating, however not everyone has the time to spend a week or several weekends in the classroom attending the course. Evening classes are another option but require a long commitment as you need to attend once a week for many weeks.
Interactive learning offers an alternative to the traditional methods of teaching theory courses, allowing you to learn when you want and where you want, all you need is access to the internet. Invigilated Assessments
These can be offered for free to anyone who books an online course with us and who requires an invigilated assessment for a commercial endorsement or as a Master 200 prerequisite. We can also arrange invigilated assessments at other sites around the country, or elsewhere in the world, at a cost.
Please note if you intend to use this certificate as part of your application to the MCA for Master 200, Officer of the Watch etc. qualifications; an invigilator will need to be present whilst you sit the final assessments. This can be arranged free of charge at our classroom in Plymouth or for a small fee we can usually arrange it somewhere near you.
The course is valid for 6 months, it can be extended by paying a £30 admin fee. Extensions are available within 3 years from the time the course has lapsed. Once a course has lapsed for longer than 3 years, it will be terminated.

To enable access to your online course we need to share some of your personal data with Navathome via www.navathome.com. This training website and database is held and maintained on a secure server. Navathome is an RYA training centre which specialises on online navigation training and will not use your personal data for any reason other than enabling your course.
